[ He disengages and whips his blade right back in, barely giving her (or himself) time to breathe. It's just as well that he has already tired himself on forest shrapnel else this would be harder on Iryha. ]

I. Have. Lost. EVERYTHING! [ Each word punctuated by a strike of his sword. ] Everything! To a people who delight in warfare! I had accepted it. I had accepted my loss. But now I see these imbeciles rattling the sabers for war! Why can't you always be good? Why must you fight all the time? Why can't you simply share all that you have instead of squabbling over the pieces?!

[ Despite the words, he doesn't expect answers. The hollow space in his chest can't grow any emptier. He lost all trust for mortalkind long, long ago.

Hot tears blur his vision but still he fights, moving on instinct, reacting to her silhouette rather than her image. ]
emet_sulk: (53 damn you hero)

And if you weren't here?

[ With how much strength he's putting into each blow, he'll soon quickly tire or slow - he's already starting to breathe hard. The only problem is weathering the onslaught until then. ]

This is what you seek to save? Capricious fools who will forget your lesson as soon as you disappear?!

[ In a moment when their blades lock again, he shoves her back and ignites a cartridge. With it he carves glowing blue X's in the air and they roar towards her. ]

[ Though he brings his own blade up to block it, the heavy weight of her two-handed sword causes him to stagger. ]

I just want...for man to cooperate...of their own will! Because it is the given thing to do and not only the right thing! [ he yells back. ]

[ Again the cartridge ignites. This time what roars out is a creature of blue flame, serpentine and winged. ]

[ He grits his teeth and lets out an inarticulate, frustrated yell. The creature whirls and lashes the area around him with its blue fire - but it's not nearly as powerful as its intimidating appearance suggests. It's forceful but, spread across as wide an area as it is, the impact is no worse than a concentrated strike. Back on their world, that would have been a different story.

The vestiges of its flames flicker and die quickly once it's gone, leaving him standing in the middle of a patch of lightly scorched earth. ]

[ He turns his body to avoid some of the blood missiles but others strike him on the arm and side. The sharp pain causes him to gasp; before he can collect himself, her sword comes swinging.

He could have avoided it if he were in a clear state of mind and using everything at his disposal. But his clumsy parry sees him reeling. Then he trips over his own feet and falls. ]

[ He doesn't seem inclined to struggle anyway, staring up at her with a blank expression, breathing hard, eyes still wet with unshed tears. ]

I just want to die, [ he mumbles. ] Is that too much to ask? I'm tired, Irhya. I want to sleep. I want to see my people again.

[ He exhales a long sigh and closes his eyes. 'Go home'... It's all he has ever wanted. But for him, returning home simply means death anyway. What sort of encouragement is that?

But he has to keep struggling. For Hythlodaeus' sake if no-one else's. ]

...Let me up, Irhya.

[ He slowly sits up, curling up with his arms folded atop his knees and face hidden. Now that the anger has worn off, he feels nothing but bone-deep exhaustion. If only he could sink into the earth and be done with it all. ]

Do you really think my people would accept me, after everything I've done?

[ Even if Hythlodaeus did find a way to bring him home, he would be exiled. He was too wild, too used to the mortal pace of time. He couldn't remember patience. ]

I wish to return home to see it one last time. Then I will take myself somewhere far away from our city and give myself to the Lifestream.
emet_sulk: (42 you wound me sir)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2021-05-08 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Another world...such as this one?

[ He slowly shakes his head before finally lifting it to meet her eyes, face drawn. ]

It is not that I don't want to be with you, but I promised Hythlodaeus I would return home with him. I can't very well leave him alone to face the Final Days.

[ He hesitates. Then adds: ] Every living creature has its time. Even we, with our long lives, knew when we had contributed all we could. You do not have to find ways to encourage me to live, Irhya.

[ They would be safe, and they would likely be happy in each other's company, but Hades also wagers they would eventually grow miserable without others like themselves. They had thrived as a community; they would wither alone. ]

This is where our people differ: there is no such thing as a 'hero' in Amaurot. We do not elevate others to pedestals as you do.

[ Reaching over, he rubs her head, fingers kneading gently over her ears. ]

And so I would exile myself and take the burden of debate off their shoulders. I would not offer them more reason to be divided.

[ He gazes at her steadily, eyes unblinking. His voice lowers. ] It is one thing to offer one's own life in service to others. It is quite another to take other's lives for your own purposes. Someday, perhaps you mortal races will come to understand the difference.
emet_sulk: (27 you disappoint me)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2021-05-09 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
[ He snorts. ] No. He has the past version of myself to woo. If all goes well, he will have centuries to spend with another, better version of me.

[ His hand falls away and he rearranges his legs so they're crossed instead. He still sits hunched over though. ]

My mind is made up, Irhya. I would appreciate it if you respected my decision.

[ By his tone, he won't be budged from this. ]

[ His jaw clenches. He can understand her anger, but such is the view of someone who doesn't have eternity to live. Someone for whom death can come without warning.

It's simply one of those things they cannot comprehend because they haven't lived it. ]

I do accept it, [ he says tensely. ] I am leaving it in your hands, am I not? You still don't understand just how old I am - I have lived, loved, and lost so much more than you can imagine. I have seen the rise and fall of civilisations even your historians have forgotten about.

[ He pushes her hands away, face grim. ] As I said: I am no hero. Therefore, I am not martyring myself. Such concepts are your invention. I am simply old. I have nothing more to give to our star besides stories of your past. Can you not let me die on my own terms this time?
emet_sulk: (05 then so can mine)

[personal profile] emet_sulk 2021-05-10 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He can tell she doesn't like his answer. That's fine. It's his life to live or end.

Grasping her hand, he lets her pull him to his feet, stooping afterwards to collect his fallen weapon. As he brushes off the soil and grass, he wonders if there is anything left worth living for. ]

...I'm sorry, [ he says quietly as they make their way back. He doesn't know what else to say. ]
